At the
end of February 2003 we sent Mags, our Highland cow, off for a spring
holiday to see Mr. Highland bull. Mags was left to run with the herd for
a few weeks to make sure she was 'covered' by the bull.
When we went to fetch Mags home we fell in love with a much lighter coloured
cow with a calf at foot. So, needless to say, welcome Cadron the cow and
calf to Brookwood Farm!

Last year one of our hybrid chickens decided she wanted to sit on
some eggs. We thought she was too young to be a mum so moved her whenever
she sat down.
Eventually we had to give in, thinking she wouldn't go last the whole 21
days needed to hatch the eggs - but she did!
The first sign of new life was a surprisingly loud peep coming from somewhere
'in' the chicken.

Then a little black head appeared from under her wing and here was the first
little chick. |

Our young
cockerel, Johnny Handsom, out with some of his girls, with the ducks in
the background. We also have a Rhode Island Red cockerel, Big Red.
It is very interesting to see how they look after the hens, each having
his own little group of favourites to care for and watch over. We obviously
have chicks hatching from spring through summer and it is a delight to see
these little miracles emerge from their shells, cheeping for all they are
worth, and then to watch mother hen teaching them what they need to know!

The ducks

Morag, Mags's calf, 4 years ago, so sweet, as she still is, just bigger!

Nell and her first litter of 9 piglets at 3 weeks old. She and Tom, the
boar, are Tamworth cross Gloucester Old Spots. We also have a Berkshire sow
called Bess, who had a litter in spring. Piglets are incredibly entertaining
and many a moment can be spent watching them racing round like mad things!
